Resolved Question: Nursing diagnosis question?
Are nurses able to “diagnose” a heart murmur? For example, if you were listening to heart sounds (S1, S2) and heard a systolic murmur, would you simply chart that you heard an abnormal sound?
Would a medical diagnosis be “Heart Murmur due to Mitral Valve Prolapse” for example, and a nursing diagnosis be “Murmur heard” or “abnormal S1/S2 sound”?
Are nurses able to diagnose something like a heart murmur?
Would a nursing dx be hypoxia or cyatonic, whereas a medical dx would by hypoxia due to TB?
P.S. This is not related to an actual case, just curious.
Thanks!
Thanks. I’m in Canada too. A nursing diagnosis isn’t really a dx, but more a describing of symptoms or potential risks for a patient. I just want to know exactly *what* I would chart if I heard a murmur. Since I’m a pre-med *and* LPN student, I’m really having a hard time trying to look at how to “diagnose” from a nursing perspective. To me, a nursing diagnosis just seems “incomplete”, if that makes any sense. I keep looking at it from a medical dx perspective I think…

Open Question: Can having a serious mental illness such as depression kill you?
i know you can die by suicide, but for example, me, i have major depressive disorder with psychotic features, anxiety, insomnia, irritability and paranoia. I was reading that having depression alone can shorten your life do to the toll it takes on your body, since it affects your whole body.
Ive also heard it can cause you lots of heart problems, even heart disease and heart attacks. What else can it cause, or how else does it affect you? and by me having these different complications, is my life shortened already?
I am declared legally insane to be honest. I have to see a case worker for the rest of my life and be on meds as well. and have been hospitalized 2 times so far. im barely 18 and have been in treatment for about 12 years now

Open Question: What’s up with my parents? Anyone have an explanation :(?
Ok, about 4 months ago or more I was thought to of had a heart murmur and only now, 4 months or more later have they finally taken me in for another check up even though I keep asking. I’m only 13 so I may be missing something that adults do or whatever, anyone help me understand the situation. This has happened before with other medical and non medical stuff, my Dad’s a last minute person and my Mom doesn’t live with us, but she’s close by.
I’m going into medical science when I’m older, I had the definition of a heart murmur explained as soon as I heard about it, I’m going to the doctors in 2 hours so I’ll tell you the results afterwords, thanks for replying.

Open Question: A Question about Yaz and Smoking.?
I know it says not to smoke while on YAZ bc. It states it very clear of the risks.
But my question is, have any of you women tried smoking with yaz? Have you had any side effects if so? I know its risky and all that…
Im a smoker. I know, I need to quit asap if Im on YAZ….but, as most of you know, smoking is not an easy habit to stop. I need to stop because ive been getting so many headaches, and Im fearing Im developing blood clots(which, should make me say DUH, stop smoking dummy!) but, I need experienced answers please.
No judgments or crude remarks please, Im on my way to quitting; since I do also have a heart condition(not too bad, only a murmur…but, still could end up being risky) I just need to know the gist.
Thank you. :)

Open Question: Heart Problem (again, a little different)?
My cousin (not too closely related) had a congenital heart problem when he was younger and it got treated at age 8 or something like that. Now, my pediatrician tells me that I have a heart murmur, and it sounded like he was a little frightened and referred me to a pediatric cardiologist. I have a lot of the symptoms described on the web (excessive tiredness during activity, etc.) and I just want to know in advance if I might have a heart problem. I’m healthy, 14 years old, but I was born prematurely. Could this be related to my cousin’s congenital heart defect, and could I possibly have one? Thanks.

Open Question: please help! sick, undiagnosed, and scared!?
hey guys.
i’m a 16 year old female, and i was always pretty healthy. i don’t drink, smoke, do drugs, etc.
but i’ve been really sick lately and no one can tell me why. it all started about 2-3 months ago. i started getting this constant pounding heart. it was really annoying. then i started getting sicker. i have really bad sinus pain and pressure in my head. my nose is always stuffed up. i have irregular periods, and i have to go to the bathroom alot more. my throat is yucky-feeling, extremely swollen, dry, and sore. i also have occasional ringing in my ears. it’s so weird. i also have a strange awareness of my own breathing all the time. sometimes i’m short of breath and have to sigh and yawn alot. i was diagnosed about a month or so ago with h.pylori, but i don’t think that’s what’s causing all my symptoms. i feel like i have this constant flu or illness ALL the time. i can’t do much physical activity, and i have trouble eating. even when i’m hungry, i just feel like i can’t eat. i also shake ALOT. everyone tells ne it’s anxiety, but i seriously think something it’s something else that’s making me sick. i’m kinda worried. i’m going to the clinic next week for some tests and stuff (thyroid, lyme disease, blood sugar, etc.). i’ve also have had 3 ultrasounds/echo done on my heart, and some blood tests. everything was normal. see, my “illness” or whatever is really wierd. somedays i feel somewhat ok, then the next day or so i feel completely awful.
i don’t think i have anything life threatening or anything (at least i hope not!). and i think that my heart is probably fine, and that maybe it’s just reacting or something. could i possibly have dysautonomia or chronoic fatigue syndrom? i’m NOT a hypochondriac. and anxiety MAY play a part of my “illness”, but i’m still sick. i feel like i have a contsant “flu” or something. i just wish i at least knew what it was. i’m tired of being sick.
i know it’s hard to make a diagosis online, but does anyone have any thought, ideas, advice, opinions, etc., that might help me? any one have any idea as to what is causing all my misery.
well, my grandpa was diagnosed with diabetes. i guess i will be checked for that also. thanks for the advice!
p.s. i also forgot to mention that i don’t have fevers, even when i feel like i do, and i’ve NEVER fainted or passed out. i also sweat alot more than usual. it’s strange. but i only sweat alot under my arms. i feel so freakishhhhh!!!!!!!!! :( i also have irregular periods and one my big toes were really red and sore. one was hurting and painful, went away, and then the OTHER big toe had the same thing. really weird.

Open Question: What kind of foods should I eat and avoid? I’m extremely overweight and have hormone problems.?
My endocrinologist says that I need to stay away from starches because it causes hormone problems for me (I may have PCOS). I’ve also heard that eating a high protein diet can cause heart disease, cancer…
I dont like a lot of beef or pork, and I really do like chicken and turkey. also like peanuts and almonds, but they are high in fat, so I dont know if I should eat them regularly.
I dont like a lot of vegetables. I pretty much only like brocolli, colliflower, corn, lettuce, and peppers.
I usually eat mostly carbohydrates (which is apparently really bad for my hormones.), but I dont want to go on some extreme atkins diet and cut them out completely.
What are some good suggestions of foods to eat that will help replace all these carbs that I usually eat. It seems like there is a bad side to almost every food.
Tangy, you’re not helpul.
i already dont eat fries and chips and I dont drink soda.

Open Question: Psychiatric Nurses qualified to care for medical illnesses?
Is it safe or even legal for someone with a serious Disease in the UK(such as heart disease or MS) to be in an NHS Psychiatric ward with Psychiatric nurses only - instead of RGN (Staff Nurses)?
I was told the other day that Psychiatric Nurses are ‘Nurses’ just like a ‘normal’ staff Nurses and are qualified to care for people who aren’t mentally ill.
But looking into this, it seems Psychiatric nurses don’t in fact do the same course as Adult nurses at University after all.
Is this correct?
Thank you.

Open Question: Is this story legit ‘Study on Prayer reveals correlation’?
http://articles.latimes.com/2005/may/02/health/he-prayer2
Scroll down to ‘Early research’ I’ve pasted what it says below
Early research
Cardiologist Randolph Byrd did the first major clinical study on distant healing at San Francisco General Hospital in 1988. He divided 393 heart patients into two groups.
One group received prayers from Christians outside the hospital; the other did not. His study, published in the Southern Medical Journal, found that the patients who were not prayed for needed more medication and were more likely to suffer complications. While it had flaws, the study garnered considerable attention.
Since then investigators have continued to look at the possible effects of remote prayer and similar distant healing techniques in the treatment of heart disease, AIDS and other illnesses as well as infertility. Numerous experiments involving prayer and distant healing have also been done involving animals and plants. One such study found that healers can increase the healing rate of wounds in mice.
?Critics often complain that if you see positive results in humans it is because of positive thinking, or the placebo response,? said Dr. Larry Dossey, a retired internist in Santa Fe, N.M., and author of numerous books on spirituality and healing. ?Microbes don?t think positively, and are not subject to the placebo response.?
In the early ?90s, Elisabeth Targ and colleagues at the California Pacific Medical Center studied the effects of distant healing on 20 AIDS patients. Schlitz, who worked with Targ (who died of a brain tumor in 2002), said the study found those receiving prayer survived in greater numbers, got sick less often and recovered faster than those who did not. A follow-up study of 40 patients found similar results.
At about the same time, Duke University?s Krucoff was leading a small but unusual experiment to determine if cardiac patients would recover faster after angioplasty surgery if they received any of several intangible (noetic) treatments. His study compared the results of healing touch, stress relaxation and distant healing with standard care.
Spiritual healers from around the world ? including Jews leaving prayers at the Western Wall in Jerusalem, Buddhists praying in monasteries in Nepal and France, Carmelite nuns in Baltimore offering prayers during vespers, and Moravians, Baptists and fundamental Christians praying during church ? each simultaneously prayed for one of several designated groups in the study.
All of the groups did better than the standard care group, with those receiving distant prayers doing best. He has since completed a larger, multi-site study. That study ? the largest to date ? is currently under review for publication in a medical journal.

Open Question: heart beating hard and fast?
sometimes my heart will just start beating really hard and fast, or fluttering. It has happened after I hit something, or just running. Even during warm up.I play football for my high school and weigh 150lbs so I would consider myself healthy. It doesn’t happen very often but when it does I feel like i am about to pass out, i get really dizzy. Would this be a heart condition? Also when I was born the doc found a heart murmur, but cleared it after a couple days, if that would help at all
