Open Question: Dizzy and light headed often. Is there something wrong with my heart?
For a long time now in years I have experienced a heavy dizziness when standing up from a sitting or laying position. I have tried to ignore, thinking that perhaps I have a bad habit of standing up too quickly or I’m not keeping with a good nutrition. I am now, however, a little more concerned about it. When I stand up I immediately feel light-headed and at loss of balance, my vision blurs and my entire body goes numb. At this point I am usually crouched on the ground or holding myself against a wall or to a fixed item. On every one of these episodes I am completely blind for a few seconds and somewhat confused. It is as if for a second I’m asleep, and my senses come back to me slowly, like my brain is rebooting. I know it sounds silly but this is what I feel. I ask if this issue may be tied to a problem with my heart because during these episodes what I feel first after my entire body is numb is my heart beat. Usually it is very slow, and then suddenly it beats hard and takes on more speed as I gradually recover my vision, sense of feeling, and strength. I have been diagnosed with a heart murmur, so the extra hard beat is something I am used to. However I was never told by my physician that this type of dizziness was a normal part of my heart condition. Unfortunately I don’t know much about my condition, and I don’t like to visit my physician because she does very little for me besides offer me a drug or tell me my request to see a specialist has been declined. I am 18 years of age, a male, and am very concerned about what may be wrong with me. Is there something dangerously wrong with my heart? Are heart murmurs dangerous?
