Open Question: Does anyone have experiences - positive or not - regarding heartworm positive dogs?
My dog tested positive for heartworm (please refrain from blasting about the heartworm preventative lectures, I feel like the scum of the earth at the moment for missing doses). We are currently waiting to have the confirmational bloodwork come back on Wednesday and until then I’m tossing around options.
According to my vet there are really two options.
1. Monthly heartguard religiously forever, the worms will eventually die and pass through his bloodstream. This has a risk of heart disease.
2. Two days at the vet, chem workups, chest x-rays, urinalysis, and shots with doxycyline for a month. The main issue is he would need to remain very calm and quiet for the month with basically only leash walking and no excitement so his heart doesn’t give out. If needed I could get sedatives to keep him calm.
My husband is deployed overseas right now, this is his dog. The dog isn’t even two years old yet, he tested negative last year so this is a recent infection. The vet doesn’t seem overly pessimistic because he is young and overall healthy but I am worried and do NOT want to have to tell my husband his dog died while he’s in theatre.
Can you please tell me your experiences (second hand are okay!) so I can try to make the right decision for my dog? I dropped the ball on keeping him on the preventative as religiously as I should have - I don’t care how much it costs, I will pay it, I want him to live and be healthy.
Thanks.
