Open Question: Does mental retardation prevent military service?
My younger cousin has been talking to Marines recruiters and is interested in joining. We want to support him, but we don’t want him to get his hopes up, since he has a 75 IQ, the emotional age of a ten year old on a good day, and severe ADHD that, despite his refusal to take it, needs stimulant medication at 20 years old. I know that things like heart murmurs can prevent enlistment, but I am unsure of any mental conditions or disabilities. Can anyone tell us if there is a possibility that he will be accepted as an enlistee? By the way, I am not attempting to troll; this is a legitimate question that requires a legitimate answer.
Andy and Professor, thanks for the advice and help. I personally agree with you, as do my mother, father and aunt; however, not all of my family share this opinion. We want to help him, but since he isn’t even trustworthy with a car, we are terrified what he can do with a gun.
