Open Question: Heart surgeons: Read Post for details?
My “friend” is a 61 year old man approximately 5′9″ and about 180 pounds. He had an acute heart attack two weeks ago when his right main artery collapsed and they put in a stent. The doctors said they were going to do emergency bypass on the spot, but decided to wait and let him get strong. His left main artery is 80% blocked and there are other blockages. As of right now he will need triple bypass, but will know more when a second cath procedure is done in two weeks. He also may have Stenosis of Bicuspid Aortic Valve. On top of that, his heart squeeze test was only about 35%. After a closer look, surgeons may decide to fix the murmur with a pacemaker device at the time of the bypass surgery. The doctor said he was extremely lucky and they were surprised that, given the circumstances, he looks as good as he does. However, he has severe heart disease and is basically a walking time bomb.
I just want an honest answer (that I will keep to myself) on the risks of his particular situation, his chances of making it through surgery, and how bad everything really is. I don’t want to be patronized, just the facts please.
