Open Question: im having chest problems..help?

for several months now, every few days i get these bad chest problems where like my chest tightens up and i have to inhale really deeply to get enough air and the left side of my chest gets these sharp pains.
can anyone give me any ideas as to why this is happening?
is it maybe stress or something? do i HAVE to go to a doctor or are there other options? one of my friends who has a heart murmur gets sort of the same symptoms..
well yea..,its pretty uncomfortable, so thanks, any feedback is appreciated.
