Open Question: Is this a good Opening Chapter for my novel?
Forever Young
By: Selina Swift
Chapter One: The Birthday Gift
I sighed as my eyes wondered across the June calendar.
?Oh god,? I murmured as I saw the highlighted date. Today was my sixteenth birthday. Usually, you?d think every girl would look forward to their sixteenth birthday. The party, the car, the presents? well not me. I regret my birth. I have every reason to.
When I was ten years old, my grandma told me my destiny. I didn?t believe her at first. I thought she was lying, but she showed me prove, and evidence?
?Nikki, when you turn sixteen, you?re life will be changed forever.? Grandma had told me.
?What do you mean?? I asked her.
?I don?t want to scare you young one, but the reason you were born was to become a part of the Youngblood clan.? She whispered.
?Youngblood clan?? I repeated, confused.
?Our family has a secret. Our ancestors weren?t like other peoples ancestors.? She explained.
?You mean my great great great great great grandparents?? I gasped.
?Yes dear,? she began. ?You will be the new addition to the Youngblood clan. They will teach you their ways, their skills, all their knowledge, will be in your brain.?
?What do you mean, granny?? I had asked.
?You,? she paused, hesitating weather to tell me or not. ?You will be a??
?A what?? I asked impatiently.
?Vampire.? She whispered.
And that?s all I remembered. I?ve had nightmares ever since. My fears were coming to life. I?ve seen every vampire horror movie, and I knew I would be a monster. I dropped my eyes to the floor and climbed back in bed. I shut my eyes tightly, praying that this day will be over with, hoping that my heart will stop beating this moment.
There was a knock on the door.
I didn?t get out of bed. My whole body was shaking. I felt paralyzed.
?Nikki, it?s me.? Grandma whispered threw the door.
My body took over. Without thinking, I got out of bed and opened the door.
There she stood. Her black, curly hair was piled on her head in a thick bun. Her full, red lips were curved into a smile, but her eyes were filled with worry and concern. She stepped in my room.
?I know I should have waited till today to tell you your destiny.? She said, wrapping her long arms around me. A tear slid down my cheek.
?I?m happy you told me.? I lied, my voice cracking.
?Don?t lie to me.? She scolded, and stopped hugging me. She looked me in my eyes.
?Now, when your mother tells you, please act surprised.? Grandma begged.
I’m not finished with it yet. What do you think? I’m trying to make my story as original as possible. Any tips?
