Open Question: Ramadan Section: Who are the Ahlul-Bayt (People of the Household)?
I have asked this question numerous times and have not gotten as answer. Can the Shia brothers and sisters please explain to me why the wives and other daughters of the prophet are not part of Ahlul-Bayt? Please read the entire question, and if you are not going to answer my question, then don’t bother posting anything.
Ahlul-Bayt in the Shia belief includes: Ali & Fatima, Hassan, Hussein, Zain Al-Abidein, Al-Baqir, Al-Sadiq, Al-Kathim, Al-Ridha, Al-Taqi, Al-Hadi, Al-Askari and the Mahad: Muhammad ibn Hassan Al-Askari.
But, according to the verse 33:33 (which I was given as proof that Ahhlul-Bayt is pure):
And stay quietly in your houses, and make not a dazzling display, like that of the former Times of Ignorance; and establish regular Prayer, and give regular Charity; and obey Allah and His Messenger. And Allah only wishes to remove all abomination from you, ye members of the Family, and to make you pure and spotless. (Yusuf Ali)
And stay in your houses. Bedizen not yourselves with the bedizenment of the Time of Ignorance. Be regular in prayer, and pay the poor-due, and obey Allah and His messenger. Allah’s wish is but to remove uncleanness far from you, O Folk of the Household, and cleanse you with a thorough cleansing. (Pickthall)
And stay in your houses, and do not display yourselves like that of the times of ignorance, and perform As-Salat (IqamatasSalat), and give Zakat and obey Allah and His Messenger. Allah wishes only to remove ArRijs (evil deeds and sins, etc.) from you, O members of the family (of the Prophet SAW), and to purify you with a thorough purification. (Hilali/Khan)
However, when looking at the verse right before it (33:32):
O Consorts of the Prophet! Ye are not like any of the (other) women: if ye do fear (Allah), be not too complacent of speech, lest one in whose heart is a disease should be moved with desire: but speak ye a speech (that is) just. (Yusuf Ali)
O ye wives of the Prophet! Ye are not like any other women. If ye keep your duty (to Allah), then be not soft of speech, lest he in whose heart is a disease aspire (to you), but utter customary speech. (Pickthall)
O wives of the Prophet! You are not like any other women. If you keep your duty (to Allah), then be not soft in speech, lest he in whose heart is a disease (of hypocrisy, or evil desire for adultery, etc.) should be moved with desire, but speak in an honorable manner. (Hilali/Khan)
Verse 33:33 would be referring to none other but the wives of the prophet Muhammad (pbuh), which includes all of the wives and not just Fatima or Ali and his descendants. So my question is, how come you do not consider Aisha and Hafsa as part of the Ahlul-Bayt when the verse clearly states that it was being referred to the “wives” of the prophet, meaning not Fatima? Don’t Aisha and Hafsa also fall under that category and thus are “pure”?

I don’t know if you can speak Arabic, so here is the translation:
O wives of the Prophet! Whoever of you commits an open illegal sexual intercourse, the torment for her will be doubled, and that is ever easy for Allah. And whosoever of you is obedient to Allah and His Messenger SAW , and does righteous good deeds, We shall give her, her reward twice over, and We have prepared for her Rizqan Karima (a noble provision Paradise). O wives of the Prophet! You are not like any other women. If you keep your duty (to Allah), then be not soft in speech, lest he in whose heart is a disease (of hypocrisy, or evil desire for adultery, etc.) should be moved with desire, but speak in an honorable manner. Now, let’s examine these verses further. You claim that this verse refers to Fatima, Ali, Hassan, and Husain. That means 1 woman, and 3 men. Verses 33:30 - 33:34 clearly shows it’s reference to a group of women (not 1) and at least one male.
?????? - Oh wives [33:30]
?????? - Oh wives [33:32]
???? - You are not (feminine, plural) [33:32]

????? - Be soft (feminine, plural) [33:32]
???? - And speak (feminine, plural) [33:32]

???? - From you (feminine + masculine, plural) [33:33]
??????? - And to purify you (feminine + masculine, plural) [33:33]
?????? - And remember (feminine, plural) [33:34]
This proves that these verses are referring to a group of women (wives) and not Fatima, but all of the prophet’s wives. When it came to the reference of Ahlul-bayt, it referred to a group of women and at least one man. When there are a group of women and men, the word will take the masculine form. However, it is clear that these verses referred to the wives of the prophet and the man/men in his family. Ahlul-Bayt means: People of the household. The prophet’s wives according to these verses in the Quran, and considered part of Ahlul-Bayt.
Let’s take the claim that the verses came in different times, now, let’s only have a look at 33:33 and nothing else. All of the verbs used in this verse are referring to a group of women:
???? - And stay (feminine, plural) [33:33]
?????? - Your home (feminine, plural) [33:33]
????? - Display ‘v’ (feminine, plural) [33:33]
????? - And preform (feminine, plural) [33:33]
????? - And give (feminine, plural) [33:33]
????? - And obey (feminine, plural) [33:33]
???? - From you (feminine + masculine, plural) [33:33]
??????? - And to purify you (feminine + masculine, plural) [33:33]
Keep in mind, I am aware of the Hadith when Muhammad (pbuh) had Fatima, Ali, Hassan, and Husain under his cloak and said “Allah wishes to purify you with a thorough purification”. This however does not show that it limits it to only those four. If you say it does, then what about Hussain’s descendants? They were not under the cloak, so how do they end up in that list?
Ahlul-Bayt translates to: people of the household. So, why aren’t his wives and other daughters considered just that? If the Hadith clearly shows that Fatima, Ali, Hassan, and Hussain are Ahlul-Bayt and thus, as you claim “pure”, what about Zain Al-Abidein, Al-Baqir, Al-Sadiq, Al-Kathim, Al-Ridha, Al-Taqi, Al-Hadi, and Al-Askari? How are they part of Ahlul-Bayt if they weren’t in the cloak? The Hadith obviously does not limit only those four as Ahlul-Bayt.
I want to clarify something before I post this question, this isn’t to find fault. If I keep asking questions where people do not have answers, doesn’t that mean that so far the claim that only those 4 were Ahlul-Bayt is wrong? The way I look at it is if I can be proven wrong, you are right, not the other way around.
I would really like to get answers from:
