Open Question: Please help me edit this paper.?
The first ethical code of all-medical provider is to ?do no harm?. Either doctors or nurses we all want to provide the best care to our patients best interest. Do no harm is mentioned in the Hippocratic oath and the Nightingale pledge. In hospital setting, as health care providers we are doing our best to treat the patients and return them to the condition before if we can. But there is a circumstance actively killing is an issue discuss in by many health care provider and patients. We are often ask by the question when is it morally right to end a person life or simply allow the person to die. This topic likes many are very controversial and debatable.
Euthanasia can be defined as mercy killing or the act of ending a life. It has three sets of distinction voluntary, involuntary and non-voluntary. The involuntary euthanasia received less controversial simply because it sounds more like murder. Murder is considered wrong and need to pay for the act by the legal law. Voluntary and non-voluntary euthanasia divided into active or passive. Active voluntary euthanasia received more controversial than any other euthanasia because to some people it means murdering and assisting with the murder. It is considered illegal in many countries. Passive voluntary euthanasia is more related to living will, express consent and there is an advance directive. Non-voluntary passive euthanasia described more about natural death in newborn with severe diseases or terminal ill patients. Non-voluntary active euthanasia described anyone without a living will or advance directive and they got themselves in situation they cannot express wishes. The family has to make the decision for them.
Involuntary euthanasia is easily to determine that it is not legal and morally right since it is related to killing. Passive non-voluntary euthanasia is less controversial because the patient tends to not be able to express opinion like in the case of newborn babies. The non-voluntary active euthanasia I have discussed over the case of Terri Schiavo. I talked about when it is morally right to end the life. In this paper, I will focus on the active and passive euthanasia, as it is more controversial and raised many debate.
Passive voluntary euthanasia is usually compared to as in the case of do not resuscitate. It defined as withdrawing medical treatment as the patient?s advance directive or living will stated. It is different than active euthanasia in the act. It is not literally acting on the patient as compared to the active voluntary euthanasia. I think passive voluntary euthanasia is legal in the U.S. Many hospitals will asked patient what he/she wants to do with the care by giving them information about advance directive and do not resuscitate. Doctors tries to convince patient on signing the do not resuscitate in cases of the heart stop beating. I think the patient should be able to exercise their libertarian right since they are capable of making the choice when they are fully conscious. In a case morally wrong is the act of actively participated in the euthanasia.
Active voluntary euthanasia should not be considered legal since this is no difference than assisting the patient with the killing. The case often discuss is about terminally ill people. A person with a terminal cancer who is in a lot of pain would like to end their life and asked the doctor to help them. Many argued that this person is in the terminal stage and would die anyway. He is suffering so much pain and requested to be kill this is giving a permission. The doctor did as he was asked and it would not be consider as murder. Some may also used the libertarian right as an argument like this is their own life and they ought to make their own decision. All of these are good reasons to why active voluntary euthanasia should be legal but these cannot be acceptable.
I believe that the terminally ill patient is in so much pain so he cannot think clearly about his decision. If the doctor assists him this is no difference than killing. It may be difference than murder due to the intention of the doctor is to help the patient but he has violated the ground theory of medical ethic. The law does not support the action of helping the patient died. The patient may want to died and refused all the medical treatment as this is his right but assisting with the death is killing the patient. This is against medical advice and the Hippocratic oath. If the doctor assists the patient with his request he is destroying the meaning of life. His action will influence other patient?s view about what doctor job is. Doctor is very well respected and viewed by patients as the healer. Assisting with the death of a patient will changed the view of the patient and society about doctor. The patient may be in pain and become depressive so his request is not acceptable under the law.
In the end, other than the involuntary euthanasia and active voluntary euthanasia that is very debatable. I think others types of euthanasia is acceptable in certain cases. United States is still a country that does not legalize the active voluntary euthanasia except in Oregon where it is legal. I do not think active voluntary euthanasia is acceptable and should be legalized. Legalizing active voluntary euthanasia will put society at stake. We cannot encourage everyone to end their life in any time they want. They may be depressed and is not in their clear mind. There are certain cases we should think about the best interest of the patients but in case like this it should not be acceptable. The moral line should draw between the acts itself.
