Open Question: Heart murmur, is this serious?again?
When I was young I had heart murmur and had lots of tests and wires all over me checking for hole in the heart and all but after loads of that they dismissed it as an innocent murmur. Now I just had a check up for immigration to Australia and the doctor said I have heart murmur and wants tests done add said pretty bluntly they might replace a valve. He seemed a bit odd though and told my mum to go check her freckles for cancer? I’m 18 now and he said it’s grade 3 aortic vAlve that needs to me monitored for 24 hours which I’ve booked an appointment for should I worry about this I do loads of exercise and gym and skating. I do however drink a lot of coffee which does give my palpitations because I’m sensitive to caffeine. Only asking because he said next time I’m playing football I don’t want to keel over :@

Open Question: Problems with Alcoholics Anonymous….?
My father has been sober for about 16 yrs now. He attends AA meetings twice daily most days. I have taken issue with this for several reasons: First of all, he has has heart surgery and has high blood pressure and high cholesterol and Peripheral Artery Disease. He goes to meetings and always eats out at fast food joints with his acquaintances or by himself, usually because the meetings are around lunch or dinner. We want him to take better care of himself and eat properly for his health. Also, he doesn’t take the time or make the effort to exercise. The other thing is that he doesn’t really want to hang with anybody besides recovering alcoholics. At this point his life and hobbies are getting pretty limited. It seems like all he wants to do is go to meetings and everything in his life plays second fiddle including his family. Sometimes he gets preachy about alcohol and says he’s this close to a drink. He doesn’t have any urge to drink, but he’s totally obsessed with it! He takes it totally too far. I’m sure that AA has been a terrific organization for countless people and I’m well aware of it’s benefits. I haven’t suggested he stop going to meetings but he takes it that way. It’s like he’s been sucked into a cult in which he eats, sleeps and breathes AA until he’s no longer a whole, balanced person. Is there any hope for him? I just want him to feel like a human being who enjoys life without this constant anxiety and focus on alcohol. What can I do?
