Open Question: What BP would cause me to fail a pre-op physical?
I’m having a pre-op physical on June 9th for a cornea transplant. They will totally knock me out for 1 minute and numb the eye. Then they bring me back, and its local anthesesia with sedative. The surgery takes 60 min & you spend 1 hr in recovery room and then can leave w/ride.
I took my own BP on 5/21 using my co-workers wrist machine and it was 144/92. I called the nurse line and they said don’t delay surgery but come in get the BP down before the pre-op. I went in on 5/21 and the doctor read my BP at 158/98 and put me on Lisinopril. I’ve taken my BP at the Wal-Mart automatic pharmacy machine and its usually 125-135/80. I go back to the doctor and its 148/88 and they increase the Lisinopril.
Anyway, I’m stressed due to the upcoming surgery and the blood pressure, and I really want to get it over with.
What BP would cause me to fail the pre-op and have to delay the surgery?
They did some blood work and a UA with the blood pressure check. The Creatinine was 1.0, Thyroid 1.92, Potassuim 4.3, and blood sugar 110. They said blood sugar was “just a tad high” but this will not flunk me. My heart and lungs sound fine. I don’t know if they will do more blood tests or an EKG on June 9th or not. The pre-op form says EKG required on people age 60 or over or people w/ cardiac or pulmonary disease. I’m 45. I have no heart or pulmonary problems except the BP
note: the physicians assistant thought 158/98 would fail me, but in the 140’s and low 90’s probably wouldn’t for the surgery but they do want it lower than this.
