Open Question: What does it mean when a dog is leaking edema?
Today, my family put our minature poodle to sleep. He was fifteen plus years old, and while I take into account his age, this isn’t something I am inquiring about. We went to the emergency room for him because he had a dry cough and dry heaving and wheezing, kind of like a squeaker toy that has lost it’s squeak. We informed the doctor that he had a heart murmur and had not been on his medication for a week or two, because he refused to take it (he was getting smart with where we were putting it in his food, as he didn’t like taking pills). The doctor told us that his chest was filling up with edema (blood or pus, but because of his heart murmur, and since he only took an x-ray, the chances were it being adema). But, that he would give him an injection and it would drain his chest by his urinating. We had to come back almost immediately after leaving. It’s like he got completely worse after going to the emergency room. He began coughing up blood. The wheezing got worst. We had to put him to sleep. Tomorrow we were going to go to his regular vet, who knows his history, who knows all about him, who has performed surgery and such on him before. I was just wondering if anyone else has went through this? Basically … we feel as though the medication, the “injection” that the doctor gave him, might have been forced too quickly, or it was an option he did not have to select as the first. Maybe we’re trying to find answers for questions that don’t really matter, but it’s still one we are curious about.
