Open Question: How is this paragraph?

August 28th, 2010 Open Question: How is this paragraph?
I am posting the introduction here, and the paragraph. The introduction is for reference, but I specifically need help on the paragraph. I need advice on what to cut, how to make it more interesting, and grammar help. Opinions are appreciated as well. Thank you =)
Introduction:
When I was born in Galveston, Texas, I came into a tight-knit west-end community filled with gossip and tales constantly passing from mouth to mouth.
My first memory is not visual, but rather auditory: sitting in the darkness of my room I could hear the roar of the ocean, the murmur of adult lips, then the boom of their laughter. This memory speaks volumes to the years I spent on the Island. Anyone who grows up in such a community knows that there are stories lingering in their back pockets, ready to be told at the drop of the hat, and they understand that this is in some ways necessary for survival; Stories change hand like money; to receive you must give one of your own. Whether it is for the entertainment of a stranger or for the ears of close friends, these stories provide the cement for a connection. They bond us together through their carefully chosen words, their honesty, or their heart. However, today I am not going to tell one of my many tales from the island, even if they are filled with happiness, sorrow, pain and hope. Even if they might be more entertaining, more emotionally satisfying, or more humorous. I am going to tell you how I came to leave my home, and how every day I am drifting further and further apart from my original reality and way of life.
Paragraph 1:
For the first time in my life everything was perfect, and that made life delicate. If one silly child decided to come and pluck a single thread, the existence would recoil into it?s self, forming a tangle of silk that would slowly drift towards the ground placing the spider in another reality, where even the grass was taller than itself. That was my life at the start of sophomore year at Ball High School. All the pieces fit, and suddenly there was nothing to fix. Life was enjoyable. Yet, there was a nervous tension, almost as if something might go wrong at any moment. No, had to go wrong at any moment. The news stations spun with a flurry of hurricane forecasts. Newscasters and meteorologists were seemingly jubilant about those spinning white swirls that looked like a smear of white paint on a blue canvas, slapped onto our crackling screens. Year after year we were slaves to those screens. But that year, we were tired of worrying. It seemed as if autumn was in full swing, and the summer?s sun burnt tourist had crawled backed to their suburban homes to apply ointment to their raw skin, and to settle back into work and school. Finally, we had the beaches to ourselves. It was our time to play. We ignored the ominous camera crews stationed on the sea wall, with their all seeing eyes atop poles that swayed with harsh ocean breezes, admonishing us for our confidence. And when the time came to finally decide whether this seaside community should leave, the city?s collective conscious forced our mayor to tell us to shelter in place, in mockery of that swirling white splatter on the radar. As if we were saying, ?We?ve seen stronger than you, we?re veterans at this game. Go mess with Florida?

Should I be experiencing heart palpitations and flutters this early in pregnancy?

August 27th, 2010
sarah820w asked:

I’m only about 6 or 7 weeks into my pregnancy, and I’m 22 years old. I’ve already visited my OB/GYN for an ultrasound two weeks ago, and I was told that everything is fine. My next appointment for another sonogram is this Thursday, and I plan on bringing up some issues I’ve been experiencing then. In the meantime, I thought I’d consult some women that may have experienced these same symptoms. I’ve felt extremely light headed, and dizzy at times in addition to experiencing frequent heart flutters just in the past week or two (all while doing nothing strenuous, such as watching TV or lying down, or just reading). I also have the occasional mild cramping, almost as if I have period cramps from my back to my uterus. Has anyone else experienced any of these symptoms, and can tell me whether this is normal or abnormal? I’ve read a lot of questions and answers regarding my same issues with the heart palpitations on here, but for the most part, people seem to experience this problem later in the pregnancy.

Thanks!
At my OB/GYN appointment, two weeks ago, my doctor told me that there really wasn’t anything to see as of yet in the sonogram. He said I was five and a half weeks according to my last menstrual period, and 3 and a half weeks since conception. He asked me to come back in two weeks, which would be this Thursday for another sonogram, and we should see the baby as well as possibly a heartbeat.

Open Question: mother in law from hell?

Voting Question: Possible underlying heart condition?
I know this is something i should really see a physician about but im just curious to find out some possibilities before i worry too much to go out to the doctor…about 3 years ago i had a heart ablation to correct a tachycardia arythmia…surgery went ok…occasionally it still beats irregularly but its usually a matter of seconds before it corrects itself nothing like it used to be where i would suffer for hours sometimes with my heart racing..but now recently..i have noticed that my heart beats extremely slowly…sometimes when im getting ready to drift off to sleep it beats so slowly it feels like it is about to stop…i have to get myself up so that it will feel normal again…at times it feels as though i am struggling to get enough air…like im having trouble breathing..but not as severe as something like asthma…and recently i have noticed now that upon standing i get extremely dizzy..not just occasionally..its like all the time…ive had an ecg recently as i have to for my job…and the first time i had it done i read the paper and it says borderline bradychardia…im in med school so i know a little bit about this stuff..i know what bradycardia is..but it didnt really concern the physician..my blood pressure is usually relatively low…more often im within the range of about 100/54 or very close to that…last time i went to the doc they had to retake my blood pressure because he said it was too low…this rather concerns me because even after he retook it my bp was still low..but they have a tendancy to overlook these things..i dont have a choice in physicians due to my location currently..just wondering if i may have something relatively serious going on here that i should be concerned about…if it were just the one or the other i may not be to concerned but this is a combination of things that i think may be building up for something worse to happen..no im not a hypochondriac..i hate doctors i dont like pills and such…but i think this is enough to warrant a concern
no im not on any medications…i never was they just happened to “catch” the abnormality while i was in labor one day because during childbirth they always have you hooked up to like a ton of stuff…but it presented itself then and thats the only reason they caught it that time

Open Question: trying to lose weight and get in shape this semester?

August 27th, 2010 Open Question: trying to lose weight and get in shape this semester?
i am a 20 year old male. Im 6 ft 1 in tall and weigh aproximately 210 lbs. i have had heart surgery twice, once when i was 2 and again when i was 12 to replace the aorta valve, and i also have an internal defibulator/pacemaker because i have suffered from a heart arythmia episode. i am looking to getting into shape this semester. my goal is to drop down to around 180 lbs and be in good shape. i have begun a jogging/walking routine of 2.9 miles each morning. i am not really dieting so much as just watching not to eat junk food and trying to cut out snacking during the day and drinking alot of water. Does anyone have any tips as to possible easy diet plans and tips to get into good enough shape to actually run/jog the miles along with really any health tips in general. i know there is lots on the internet but they really are more about quick soloutions that ive found or for people more in shape than i am looking to get ripped. all answers/comments are appriciated and i realize alot of people wont know much about the heart condition so if you don’t know how to specifically tailor your answer to it don’t worry and just answer based on other information. it really hasn’t slowed me down so far.

Open Question: What does it mean that I have a heart murmur?

August 26th, 2010 Open Question: Other than Extra Virgin Olive Oil, what are other healthy oils/fats to use for cooking?
I’ve heard hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated is bad for you and promotes heart disease. I’ve also heard that peanut oil and Canola oil is bad…and I’ve seen conflicting information regarding cooking oils.

Open Question: What does it mean that I have a heart murmur?
I am 25 years old, and for the first time yesterday, my doctor told me I have a “mild heart murmur”.
What does this mean? I am overall healthy, I just have some high blood pressure…I am not overweight or anything.
Should I worry??

Open Question: Chihuahua has itchy, flaky ears…?

August 26th, 2010 Open Question: Should I get my Master’s degree in Cellular & Molecular Biology before moving on to my PhD?
I am currently working on my BS in cellular and molecular biology. I currently volunteer in a Heart Disease research lab, by the time I graduate from my undergrad university I will have 2 1/2 years of experience in that lab and my name published on two papers. My current GPA is a 3.5 (which I am realistically trying to raise to a 3.65). As of now I am able to get letters of recommendation from my PI and the two MDs that I work under in my lab. I will be applying for a year long internship through CIRM (California Institute for Regenerative Medicine) where I will work on my own project. This internship will occur during my final 2 semesters; I will continue to volunteer a minimal amount in my current heart disease lab (8-10hrs per week). Assuming that I get decent GRE scores and accepted into the CIRM internship, should I apply directly to a PhD program or get my Masters first?

Open Question: When you read this, do you SEE it? Be honest please! :) (New Piece)?
IT STARTED OFF WITH AN INDIGO HORIZON. The woman walked along the beach, clutching her silk cover up closer to her body as the cool breeze threatened to freeze her. The moon suspended high and swollen in the twilight sky; the silvery light reflected against the water, causing the ocean to shimmer as if made of a thousand tiny diamonds. Pulling the hair band from her wrist, she tied her golden hair into a pony.
?Miss??
The woman eyes narrowed slightly as she tried to detect who had called her. A tap on her shoulder caused her to jump, her heart scrambling against the confines of her chest. ?Whoa, there.? Her eyes met a pair of burly wood ones. The man?s hair was a deep brown, and it hung down onto his forehead. The white collar of his shirt looked bright against the tan of his skin. His lips twitched into a small smile as the woman?s heart beat slowed. ?Hey, it?s alright.? He murmured, his eyes laughing. ?I?m not going to hurt you.?
Defence kicking in, the woman retreated back slowly. ?What do you want??
He appeared to think about it; his lips pursed and his dark eyebrows knitted together. ?A date.? He moved closer to her, and his fingers caught the woman?s elbows as her spoke into her ear. The scent of Tide and cigarettes wafted off his skin. ?You know, you walked past me over there.? She felt him nod his head in the direction she?d been walking away from. ?And I just like that, I knew.?
Though she tried, she couldn?t move. ?Knew what?? She asked, her voice low and demanding. This man couldn?t be serious, could he? There was no way she was going on a date with him; she didn?t even know him for God sake!
?What, you didn?t feel it?? She felt him smile against her cheek. ?Me and you, we?re meant to be together.?
Her mind reeled back on her?the quick snap of elastic. ?Yeah, right? She snorted. She pushed him away from her, and in the process her cover up fell to the sandy floor, revealing her coral top and light denim shorts. Before she could, the man plucked it up from the ground and balled it in his hands. ?Give it back,? She warned. ?That thing wasn?t cheap.?
The corners of his eyes crinkled. ?Or what??
?Or else,? She said, raising her eyebrows.
That response was clearly not as sinister as she?d intended it to be; the man laughed in her face. He clapped his hands together, though the sound was muffled by the fabric of her cover up. ?How ?bout this: if I give it back, you go on a date with me.?
The woman shook her head, disbelieving. ?You?re insane.?
He cocked his head to the side, still smiling. Moonlight illuminated the edges of his face in a faint silvery blue light. ?Say you?ll go on a date with me.?
She glanced at his feet and frowned. ?I don?t like men who wear flip flops.?
He kicked them off, and the woman met his eyes, which were still gleaming with triumph. Though she didn?t know exactly why; as far as she knew, she was winning this battle. ?Say it.?
?Nope.?
He shrugged, ?Fine, then.? and let the cover up spill from his fingers like sugar onto the sand. ?Can I at least get your name??
The woman weighed the pros and cons for a moment; the man couldn?t figure out where she lived by just her name? She licked her dry lips. ?Hannah.?
?That?s a pretty name, Hannah. I?m Jake.? He reached out and brushed the strand pieces of hair from her face. Startled, she froze. ?You?ll change your mind about the date thing, though. Trust me.? Hannah watched his retreating back as he walked away.
She was ninety nine percent sure she wasn?t going to change her mind on this one. Kneeling down to pick up her cover up, a small square of crumpled paper fell from behind her ear. Confusion threaded between her eyebrows as she unfolded it. She laughed aloud. That man, Jake, was never going to stop, was he?; sprawled on the paper were ten numbers and four words:
I?ll see you soon.
I’m sorry, Allen, is blue better for you?
