Open Question: I have mitral valve prolapse/heart murmur, is this normal….?
Hi im 16. I was born with mitral valve prolapse or a heart murmur. Mine is where the one valve doesnt open and close all the way. I noticed that when counting the beats per minute, that out of the minute, maybe up to 4 times I feel like my heart skips a beat. Is that the mitral valve not closing all the way? Like i feel like its like half a beat, then a pause, then the next two consecutive beats are faster. Is this normal?

Open Question: Can I get some feedback on my short story?
The New Girl
One ordinary day at Sunnydale Public School, Mr.Roxy?s 4th grade class were working on math equations when suddenly Mr.Roxy stood up and stated that he had an announcement to make . ?We are going to have a new student joining us today,? he announced. ?She is coming all the way from China and I expect all of you to make her feel welcomed and to treat her with respect,? he continued. At that moment the principal, Mrs.Jones walked in along with the new girl. Mrs.Jones informed Mr.Roxy that she was the new student and then she left.
The girl was really short, with red hair, freckles and a big mole under her nose. Mr.Roxy asked her to introduce herself to the class so that they could get to know her better. ?Hello,? she began with an accent. ?My name Lee an’ I come here one week ago. I have brotha, five yea’ old and mother but Dad died 3 year ago.? ?Oh, I’m so sorry to hear that,? condoled Mr.Roxy. She continued by explaining that her father had a fatal heart attack which was the cause of his death.
As soon as the class saw her, murmurs went around the classroom and a few students began to laugh at her accent! Samantha started chanting, ?Chinee Lee is very ugly? and everyone began to laugh even louder. Lee began to feel extremely uncomfortable. At that point, Mr. Roxy got upset with the class and assigned them 10 minutes of detention after school, due to their disrespect. Judging by the class’s first reactions, Lee was afraid that she would be disliked by her peers. Mr.Roxy then showed Lee to her seat…beside Samantha.
Samantha was really angry. ? EW!? she exclaimed. ?Chinee Lee has to sit next to me. I think I?m gonna puke just looking at that big ugly mole of hers,? she complained .
When everyone finally settled down, Mr.Roxy explained that the class would be taking a pop quiz . Groans and complaints were going around the classroom but Mr.Roxy said that if he heard one more sound from the class, he would add an extra ten questions to the quiz and upon hearing that, the class remained silent. Mr.Roxy explained to Lee that since she was new to the class, she would still take the math quiz so that he could evaluate and see what her capabilities were, but it would not actually count toward her final mark.
When everyone got the math quiz, they became even more worried because they realized that it was going to be very difficult. However, they knew that if they complained, Mr. Roxy would add to it and nobody wanted that so they just kept their mouths shut. Everyone had a tough time completing it, but eventually all the quizzes were handed in and it was then time for recess.
At recess, nobody wanted to play with Lee . She was really sad and she felt like a loner, just standing in the corner by herself. Samantha and her clique saw her and decided to pick on her a little more. They then approached her. ? EW , what is that mole under your nose supposed to be? A booger?? asked Alana and the three friends began to laugh. Lee started to cry and they ran away .
Recess was over and everyone went inside and took their seats. Mr. Roxy was finished marking the quizzes and he handed them back to the students. He wasn?t too pleased with the results though as most of the students failed it, leaving the class?s average score of only 42%. When Samantha got back her quiz, she realized that she only scored a 33% and she wasn?t satisfied at all. She then leaned over to her right in preparation to make fun of Lee, confident that she had done worse, but she was left stunned and speechless upon seeing a huge ‘94%’ and sticker on Lee’s paper. ?But how could she ….? she thought to herself .
When school was over that day, Samantha went over to Lee and asked her how she had gotten such a high mark. ?Have you always been this good in math?? Samantha asked. ?Yes,? replied Lee almost under her breath. ?But I don’t really like to brag about it.? Samantha then had an idea. She decided that if she wanted to start getting good marks, she should start being nicer to Lee and show her respect. That way, Lee may want to help Samantha. As a result, Samantha introduced herself and then apologized for being so mean the entire day. Lee forgave Samantha and they shook hands. Samantha then asked Lee if she could start tutoring her and helping her with math. Lee agreed.
After a couple of tutoring sessions, Mr. Roxy announced that the class would have another pop quiz. Everyone was happy because they knew that this would be their chance to improve their previous marks. When Samantha finally completed the quiz, she handed it in and was eager to find out her new mark. She was confident that she had done increasingly better this time.
The following day at school, Mr.Roxy said that the results of the quizzes had improved drastically and that he was very happy with them. He then handed out the quizzes and when Samantha got hers back, she was ecstatic! She got a surprising 92% this ti
this time, even better than she had expected. She ran to Lee and gave her a hug, making her aware of the new mark. She thanked Lee over and over again.
Over the next few weeks, Samantha and Lee became the best of friends and Samantha’s behavior changed for the better. Alana and Mykayla got jealous when she stopped hanging out with them as much, after Samantha realized that they were a bad influence on her. She also came to the realization that Lee was a better example overall .
Samantha and Lee’s friendship lasted for years, throughout Elementary School, and even onto Middle School and High school. They were always there for each other and Samantha changed from one of the meanest kids in school, to one of the top academically, and kindest.
THE END!!!

Open Question: Biology Help Please ?
Can you help me find:
1) Hypothesis
2) Prediction
3)Control group
4) experimental group
TUESDAY, March 8 (HealthDay News) — Reducing “bad” cholesterol levels to new lows resulted in fewer problems, including heart attacks and strokes, in people with established coronary disease, a new study finds.
Participants in the study took a high dose (80 milligrams) of atorvastatin, better known by its brand name Lipitor, a drug made by Pfizer, which also funded the study.
While current guidelines recommend LDL levels of less than 100 mg per deciliter of blood for people with stable coronary heart disease, more recent data have suggested that levels less than 70 mg per deciliter might be better, the study authors said.
That previous research was not definitive, however. So the authors of the new study undertook a review involving 10,001 people with coronary heart disease who had LDL levels of less than 130 mg per deciliter.
The participants in the study were randomly assigned to receive either 10 milligrams or 80 milligrams of Lipitor a day and were followed for about five years.
Those who were treated with the higher level of Lipitor had mean LDL cholesterol levels of 77 mg per deciliter. Those treated with the lower dosage had mean levels of 101.
In the 80 milligram group, 434 patients (8.7 percent) had a heart attack, stroke or other event, compared with 548 patients (10.9 percent) in the low-dose group. That means there was an absolute reduction in the rate of major cardiovascular events of 2.2 percent and a relative reduction of 22 percent, the study authors said.
I don’t know what the control group is because both group is receiving different amount of medication . I am not being lazy and not doing my homework, i am just really stumped .

Open Question: Staying up all night, how?
Hello. I’m Katie’s little sister. (I usually call her Riot so it’s strange calling her Katie.. ) anyways.
I’m 12 now and since I can ask a question (with Riot’s permission) I want to know how to pull a good “all nighter” Well first of all, since Katie (Riot) is asleep, I can’t be too loud, and my grand-parents are asleep, too, obviously.
I can go outside around 7 or 8, but nothing earlier; I have a webcam, drawing stuff, and a spin art thing (I’m staying the night at my grandparents house). Also, I have my own room here, but Riot is across the hall.
I have no friends, and it’s already past midnight so I can’t invite anyone over. I also have energy drinks, but I can’t drink them because I have a heart murmur (or something, I have a bad heart, and I can’t take the caffeine and stuff.) and besides, they are Riot’s.
I don’t have any gaming consoles, and I can’t watch movies.
I only have my laptop, and the other stuff I said earlier (up there ^ )
If there’s anything that you need to know, then just ask, and I’ll add it in the additional comments. :3 I hope you can help, and thanks to everyone that can help!

Open Question: How important is an EKG ? for a 49 year old?
Ive had 2-3 in the last 10 or so years when they have “heart days”. The last few said abnormal something or another which they told me was normal for my age and nothing to worry about.
So, should I bother going to heart day for the EKG alone ?
I have no insurance and the $40 charge is less than my normal blood work every 6 months.
so I will probably go anyway.
Just curious if they can find really bad unknown issues out of the blue or not ?
I go to the dr every 6 months and he listens to my heart. I am at risk because of a family history, Take BP & Cholesterol meds, am not as active as wood be ideal but still a good weight. (tall & thin)
Im probably going…but the EKG is never something my Dr suggested. Is it overkill ?
Symptoms of heart disease can be difficult to detect. That?s why getting screened is so important.
Join us for Heart Day 2012! On February 18th from 6:00 - 11:00am, St. Vincent’s Health System is offering four heart tests for $40 (a $350 value!). Participants will receive:
-An EKG
-A Lipid Profile
-A Blood Pressure Screening
-A Basic Metabolic Profile
-And a T-shirt!
